There is the Pelourinho and there is also it’s "other half". Not as trendy as the most famous part of the Historic Center but so charming and equally relevant in history, culture and charm. Just a few minutes from our hostel, there is a haven for artists and bohemians, which all the tourists are rediscovering: Santo Antônio Além do Carmo.

By car or on foot (which makes the trip more enjoyable), the journey through the history of the neighbourhood begins at the Church of  Paço, whose staircases served as the setting for recording one of the most iconic scenes of Brazilian cinema. There, was filmed the scene of "The Payer of Promises" winner of the Palme d'Or in Cannes and also his television version. A treat for any lover of the seventh art.

Continuing along Passo Street, Santo Antônio begins to reveal itself with its cafes, studios, thrift stores and antiques for all tastes. On this route you can see the Church of Boqueirão, the Convent and Church of Carmo and Fort of Capoeira, and many other  architectural marvels. But the visitor knows that he really discovered the heart of the neighborhood when he comes across the Cruz do Pascoal, a prayer that stands between the three streets that start off Santo Antônio Beyond Carmo. The area is full of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes.

With the disposition to go all the way, in the end all are faced with the main attraction of the place: The Church of Santo Antônio, surrounded by a square with benches and a park for the children. But the main prize of a tour (especially in the late afternoon) to Santo Antônio, is the view of the Bay of All Saints. Its magnificent mansions are even more beautiful in the mid-light of a beautiful sunset. Do not miss to visit.
